The purpose of The Hub vocational facility is to provide those affected by an Autism Spectrum Disorder the support they need to thrive within everyday scenarios. This will be done through the use of certain design principles such as color, texture, line and light. Comforting and muted colors will encourage the connection between the person and the built environment. The sensory aspect of the space will be supportive yet challenging in order to stimulate the user, while simultaneously providing them with the knowledge necessary to navigate through difficult physical situations. Curved lines and soft corners will offer no surprise as to what will come next in the individual's experience at the facility. This paired with serene lighting will encourage the user to trust the space and motivate them to experience social situations which may usually make them uncomfortable.
The proposed location for "The Hub Vocational Facility" is located on Michigan Street, next to the Family Caregivers' Network Society, which resides on the unceded Coast Salish Territory of the Lekwungen nations. This location is serviceable to the public because of its accessibility through the transit system and its generalized location in Victoria, BC. In proxemics to "The Hub Vocational Facility" there is James Bay Urgent and Primary Care across the street. Capital Park Dental, Red Barn Market, and multiple pharmacies are within the area. Locations such as these will be beneficial to the users in helping them with daily routines and tasks. Victoria is the main area on Vancouver Island and the goal is for anyone on the Island who is living with ASD and needs support will be able to come here rather than commute between the mainland and the island. This eliminates an overwhelming and expensive task and overall provides more comfort to the people who may be using this facility.
